Action looms over Radio job plans

Unions could ballot for strike action in Radio & Music Division, if members reject a new multi-skilled job description for a second time.

Talks on the new role broke down on 25 November, and a consultative ballot began almost immediately, with negotiators recommending rejection.

Members voted against the Assistant Producer role in an earlier ballot without any union recommendation.

The controversial role, which has been under discussion for several months, integrates three separate jobs Studio Managers, Radio Producers and web authoring.

Radio management say the introduction of Assistant Producers is crucial to the division's ability to continue production after their Value for Money changes are implemented - under this plan 239 posts close, and 124 new posts are created.

Members fear that their skills will be too thinly spread by the three-disciplined role, and quality will suffer.

There are also concerns about the likely increase in workload if the new role is introduced. A pilot of Assistant Producers in Radio 7 led to widespread complaints among staff about stress.

Management have given notice that they intend to go I ahead with boards for the new posts, despite the union ballot, and will begin selecting which redundancy volunteers will be allowed to leave.
